Uh oh. We are in the last day of August and I almost had not a discovery! But I’ve saw a post in my Facebook Page about the multi-instrumentalist DANIEL JAKUBOVIC and I think that it’s probaly the first rock band I met that sings in hebraic, and it’s pretty cool! All bands should sing (at least some songs) in their main language. Daniel was born in Israel, but now lives in New York. Today I’ve heard the album Elef Kirot (אלף קירות in hebraic) and it’s a huge mix of progressive melodic rock with a little bit of modern rock and some experimental music. Daniel is a old friend of DREAM THEATER’s keyboardist JORDAN RUDESS, and also played guitars on Jordan’s solo album “Rhythm of Time” with some great guitarist such as JOE SATRIANI, STEVE MORSE and more. Elef Kirot is mostly recommended for people who listen to bands like ANIMALS AS LEADERS, THREE PILL MORNING or even DREAM THEATER. The album has great tunes over there, even I had no idea what he is talking! Hope that Google Translator helps me. :) Cheers Daniel, you did an awesome job with the new album!

Oh my dear friends, I don’t have words to describe how full of happiness my heart is to introduce to you my first brazilian great discover of the year of 2011! I’m talking about the stoner-blues-classic rockers THE BAGGIOS with lyrics written in brazilian portuguese (with a few songs written in english). An awesome power duo from São Cristovão, Sergipe that just released their first official full length album self titled. The “The Baggios” album brings to the listeners 14 golden pieces of the best stoner rock with huge influence of blues and 70s classic rock at it finest. In “The Baggios” you certanly will find good music with a mix of many styles that makes songs like “Oh Cigana” and “Quanto mais eu rezo” the highlights of the album (it was HARD to decide some highlights). Highly recommended for the fans of the “new era” of stoner rock like GRAVEYARD, PONAMERO SUNDOWN and RED FANG or some classic things such as WHITE STRIPES and one of the first brazilian rock n’ rollers RAUL SEIXAS.

I met POMPEI NIGHTS at a CRASHDÏET tribute promoted by Street Symphonies Records with some underground bands. They are a Swedish (oh… are you kidding? what have in swedish water?) “Sleaze” Hard Rock band and have the touches of Martin Sweet (CRASHDÏET) in the production and mixing of the full length album. They remind me a lot of HARDCORE SUPERSTAR, CRASHDÏET and JAILBAIT. I think that many people are so tired of these “Sleaze” bands, but SPOMPEI NIGHTS are more than just dirty guitars and bad screams. With a huge Melodic Hard Rock influence (remembering me a lot HANOI ROCKS in some songs), they bring in the catchy debut album “Rather Die Than Livin’ In Boundaries” blubblegum chorus and great guitar duel solos, Joey Eden has a great and strong voice that’s what get my attention at most, all the songs are really well done. POMPEI NIGHTS made songs that at the first listening stick up on your mind! These guys will have a sucessful future if they want to, for sure. This debut is definitely a key to world music door.

OK, I must confess that took me some time to like WOLFMOTHER’s songs. But after I heard for two of three times of their latest album Cosmig Egg, I finally enjoyed it. WOLFMOTHER is a australian band, from Sidney, and they create an unique style to play, mixing pop melodies with heavy guitars and bass, and Andrew Stockdale has a great voice, (remember a lot LIZZY BORDEN’s voice). I still trying to define their musics in a style, and what I have is something like a huge mix of styles who results in a thing that I like to call: “70s Stoner Heavy Rock” with huge influence of COHEED AND CAMBRIA, WHITE STRIPES and EAGLES OF DEATH METAL. Is obrigatory to listen “Cosmig Egg” at the max volume possible, they certainly did it to blast out your speakers and Wolfmother is a great band that seems from a different time but with a great dose of creativity and audio quality and songwriting. If you are a fan of retro rock, I really recommend listen to.

BEARDFISH is a Swedish Progressive Rock band leaded by the mastermind multi-instrumentist Rikard Sjöblom (GUNGFLY, BOOTCUT) and have a huge influence of 70’s progressive rock and bands like THE FLOWER KINGS, YES, GENESIS and RUSH. I must say that these guys are doing something rarely seeing those days, they’re bringing the very first progressive rock elements to 2000 era. All the features that create the identity of progressive rock are in their albums, and not only that, they make a good use of instruments such like accordion, flute, saxophone and many more. BEARDFISH, for sure, is a very underrated band, once they’re just getting knowed outside of Sweden after the “Mammoth” release. By the way, “Mammoth” establish BEARDFISH as one of the finest Swedish Progressive Rock band from this decade. Great musicians, poetic lyrics, complex compositions and great instrumental. Go listen to their discography!

STORMWARRIOR was one of my biggest surprises of all time. For a long time, nothing caught my attention in Power/Melodic Metal world like HEADING NORTHE did. The new wave of Power/Melodic Metal (Specially German, Swedish and Finnish Metal) are usually very boring. And yeah, when I saw HEADING NORTHE I was thinking “Blah, another stupid power metal album”, but, HEADING NORTHE brings one of the most powerful instrumental combination I ever saw! Fast riffs, great chorus, it’s catchy. The band only fails sometimes in originality, it’s like a GAMMARAY meets RUNNING WILD, but if you don’t care about originality at all, go ahead! For sure, it’s not a album for all metalheads, and it’s is for specific moods but you must have this in your collection!
